Canoe race planned

SKOWHEGAN $ Skowhegan's 8th annual evening canoe race sponsored by the Southside Tavern and other Skowhegan businesses is scheduled for Thursday, July 17.

Registration opens at 4:30 p.m. at the Swinging Bridge in Skowhegan. The starting gun will go off at 6:30 p.m. at the Swinging Bridge.

The pro class course starts at the swinging bridge and goes about miles up river, circles the island and then returns to finish at the Swinging Bridge.

The recreational class, open to all paddlers of all ages and abilities, will circle a course three miles long. There is also a recreational kayak class.

Race organizers are hoping for a good local turnout celebrating the Town of Skowhegan and the river that runs through it, according to organizer John Alsop.

Race organizers also look forward to the return of the "pro-racers" and their sleek 25 pound carbon fiber canoes spangled with Nascar style advertising decals.

Awards will be given out following the race at the Swinging Bridge. All are invited to attend and to participate.
