Canaan fire victims need help

By Doug Harlow July 14, 2008 04:35 PM

CANAAN -- Heidi Wentworth and her two children are homeless and all of their belongings are gone after fire ripped through their mobile home Friday afternoon.

Flames shot through the roof of the 30-year-old trailer, leaving only the ribbed frame and charred timber that once were rooms of the cozy house at the end of Golf View Drive, part of Canaan Mobile Home Park on the Hinckley Road.

Wentworth, 34, said she had $10,000 in renters' insurance, but that will only cover so much.

Keepsakes, knickknacks, photo albums, clothing and appliances were destroyed.

No one was hurt, and for that, she said, she is grateful.

"I just burst -- I was devastated. I lost it," Wentworth said of seeing her home late Friday. "I sat on that ground and cried for hours on end because everything I just worked so hard for the last seven months was gone.

"It's cooked. Completely. It's gone."

Wentworth said faulty or old wiring was the cause of the fire. It was the family's second fire in the last seven months.
