Portland City Manager Joe Gray said today that he plans to return to work at City Hall on July 23.

He said he will initially work part-time until he feels strong enough to work full-time.

Gray has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and has been on medical leave since June 23, when he underwent surgery at Mercy Hospital. At the time, he said he expected to be on leave for a month.

The cancer was detected in its early stages, and he said the doctors told him at the time that the prognosis was excellent.

Assistant City Manager Patricia Finnegan has been serving as acting city manager during his absence.
