Beverage tax opponents turn in signatures

AUGUSTA -- A coalition hoping to overturn taxes on beer, wine and soda turned in more than 90,000 signatures today to the Secretary of State's Office.

The Fed Up with Taxes coalition, which includes the Maine State Chamber of Commerce and beverage distributors, gathered well more than the 55,087 needed to force a vote in November, according to a release from the group.

"Voters from all over the state eagerly signed our petitions because Maine families are struggling in this difficult economy," said Newell Augur, coalition chairman.

The Legislature passed a law earlier this year instituting the taxes as a way to pay for Dirigo Health, the state's health insurance program. Supporters of Dirigo have organized to fight the anti-tax campaign.
