Sen. Susan Collins says the Navy has not yet decided to scrap the DDG-1000 destroyer after the first two are built.
Collins said Tuesday that a top-level meeting of Navy officials that was supposed to happen last week has now been rescheduled for next week. The Navy is debating whether to stick with the current program, or build more older and less expensive Arleigh Burke destroyers.
Currently, two of the large, stealthy DDG-1000 Zumwalt warships are under contract. The first is being built at General Dynamics' Bath Iron Works shipyard and the second is being built at Northrop Grumman's Ingalls shipyard on Mississippi's Gulf Coast.
The Senate has authorized funding for the third ship to be built at Bath, but the House has balked and declined to additional funding.
