A plan by the Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, and Wells Water District to sell water to Poland Spring was tabled indefinitely by district trustees Thursday, but the plan might be resurrected eventually.
The board had considered a 30-year contract that would have allowed Poland Spring to purchase up to 432,000 gallons per day of excess capacity for roughly $900,000 per year, district Superintendent Norm Labbe said.
But opponents of the plan mobilized against it and the district relented.
Labbe said putting the plan on hold will allow a better conversation about the realities of extracting water, which he said is a rapidly replenishing renewable resource. He said he plans to meet with opponents of the extraction plan informally next month.
