WESTBROOK--Pike Industries Inc. has scaled back controversial plans for its Spring Street operations, according to a release put out today by the company.
It has eliminated a proposal to expand a quarry on the site, withdrawn a request to have a permanent gravel crusher there, and no longer wants to have an equipment shop on the property. Pike still wants to build a new $5 million asphalt plant on the site, and will continue to use a portable gravel crusher at the existing quarry. According to Pike, this will ensure "no appreciable change in the noise and dust levels associated with Pike's permitted quarry operations."
Pike's expansion plans have angered its neighbors. Idexx Laboratories has complained that a large quarrying operation was at odds with the neighborhood's growing high-tech hub image. Neighbors WPXT-TV and Artel have complained that test blasts at the quarry are impacting their own operations.
Dick Daigle, director of facilities management for Idexx, said he had not heard of Pike's new plans. Pike informed the Westbrook City Planner on Tuesday about its new vision.
"I think it's certainly going to give us pause to take a look at what they're now proposing," said Daigle. "I think it's going to take us some time to understand the scope of what they're proposing to do. Until we do that, it would be unfair for me to actually identify a position that Idexx will take on this."
