UPDATE: Search for Windham man suspended

By Portland Press Herald Staff Report July 19, 2008 03:54 PM

WINDHAM -- The Maine Warden Service this afternoon suspended its search at Highland Lake for a Windham man who is presumed drowned.

The search was suspended because of reports of bad weather but will resume at 5 a.m. Sunday, said Lt. Patrick Dorian, of the Maine Warden Service.

At about 3 p.m. Friday, Patrick Mackerron, 19, of Windham, jumped off a fast-moving boat into the water and failed to surface. Mackerron was on the boat with three friends.

He and Nathan Jackson, 20, of Casco, both jumped off the boat, which was traveling about 25 to 30 miles per hour, according to Lt. Patrick Dorian, of the Maine Warden Service. Mackerron never surfaced and is still missing.

The warden service set up a command post off of Cottage Road in Windham, on the west side of the lake. Wardens began searching about 7 a.m. today, Dorian said. The area being searched is about 60 feet deep.

Richard West, 38, of Windham, and Richard Tarvers, 28, of Westbrook, were also on the boat.

Mackerron's uncle, Clint Thompson, said the family is trying to remain hopeful.
