YORK BEACH -- For the second day in a row, a violent thunderstorm pounded York Beach late this afternoon, cutting electrical power and sending one man to the hospital with burning symptoms apparently related to a lightning strike.
The storm, which occurred about 4:30 p.m., caused wires to arc, toppled trees and prompted 14 calls to the York Beach Fire Department in the space of about half an hour, said Capt. Mark Gay.
No serious injuries were reported, Gay said, but a tourist from Massachusetts was taken to York Hospital for evaluation after he reported burning sensations in the wake of a nearby lightning strike.
Gay said the lightning toppled the chimney of a house on Sea Mist Lane, close to the A Street address where the man stood outside under an umbrella, holding an electrical cord. Gay said he could not identify the man.
The storm caused a power outage for about two hours in York Beach, and firefighters were busy responding to reports of boats in distress in the harbor, trees falling on buildings and security alarms going off.
Gay said a similar storm passed through York Beach on Friday evening, cutting off electrical power and frustrating restaurant and shop owners at the height of the busy tourist season.
