Old Hallowell Day celebrants keep police busy

By Betty Adams July 20, 2008 11:01 AM

HALLOWELL -- Police had their hands full late Saturday night and early today dealing with out-of-control Old Hallowell Day celebrants.

"We were busy until 3 a.m.," said Patrolman Julian Harwood of the Hallowell Police Department.

And a little later today Harwood was called to Page Street where the owner of a car found a stranger sound asleep inside it.

"He was drunk, had climbed into car, passed out and slept there til this morning," Harwood said today. "The owner just wanted him removed and did not want to press charges."

Harwood said he brought the man downtown to make his own arrangements to get home.

"With Old Hallowell Day you never know," he said.

At about 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Billy Jo Fielder, 31, of Augusta was arrested at the Kennebec Wharf and charged with assault. Harwood said she pushed a police officer.

Two other assaults were reported around the same time.

One woman reported being assaulted by another woman at the Kennebec Wharf.
Harwood said one of the women suffered a split lip. She was to decide today if she wanted to press charges.

Harwood said the incident erupted after a drink was spilled.

In the second incident, two men were involved in an assault behind Elio's Delicatessan. Neither man wanted to press charges, Harwood said.

He also said the Kennebec Sheriff's Office deputies made several arrests as well.

"Overall it went pretty well," he said. "I think with that number of people, you're going to have your share of problems.
