Kevin Harvick made history at Oxford Plains Speedway on Monday night, becoming the first NASCAR Sprint Cup driver to win the annual TD Banknorth 250.
"Everybody's supposed to be asleep right now, but damn I'm happy," said Harvick in victory lane shortly before 10:30 p.m.
Harvick took his first lead on lap 127, then lost it briefly to Eddie MacDonald of Rowley, Mass. on the next lap. However, Harvick, the 2007 Daytona 500 winner, regained the lead on lap 133 thanks to a terrific crossover move. He never lost the lead, easily dominating the 41-car field that featured 21 Maine drivers.
This race, this is a big deal," he said.
Harvick came to Maine ranked ninth in the NASCAR Sprint Cup points standings.
