FARMINGTON # Franklin County Soil & Water Conservation District is hosting a tree identification workshop on Tuesday, Aug. 5 from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with a rain date on Thursday, Aug. 7.
The event is ideal for a family outing, according to district manager Rosetta Thompson. The session, which will be held in Bonney Woods and Flint Woods in downtown Farmington, is open to anyone over 10. Youths under 18 must be accompanied by an adult, and discounts will be offered to families with more than four participants. Bring bug spray, a snack, and walking shoes.
The $18 pre-registration fee includes a free Tree Identification Book published by the Maine Forest Service. Consulting Forester Amanda Dow-Smith will conduct the session.
Registration forms are available at the District's Web site, www.franklincswcd.org and payment is required in advance. Participants will meet at 8 a.m. the U.S. Department Agriculture Service Center, 107 Park St., Farmington and parking is available in front of the white barn adjacent to the District Court.
In addition to learning to identify specific trees by their bark, leaves, and color, participants will learn about hardwood products, Christmas tree growth, different trees and bird and wildlife habitats.
