Cape voters shoot down school budget again

By Trevor Maxwell Portland Press Herald Staff Writer July 22, 2008 09:24 PM

CAPE ELIZABETH $ Voters on Tuesday rejected the proposed school budget for a second time, with the majority saying the $19.9 million budget is too high.

The unofficial result is 1,141 votes against the budget and 1,097 in favor of it. In the advisory question on the ballot, 66 percent of voters said the budget is too high.

The result is the reverse of the vote on June 10, when a majority of Cape Elizabeth voters rejected the budget and answered that they felt it was too low.

The proposal for that first vote was a $19.6 million school department budget. For that vote, 1,891 people voted against and 1,250 voted for it. On the advisory question, 60 percent of voters said the budget was too low.

The school department now must present another proposal to the town council, and another townwide vote must be held. That is likely to happen in August or September. In the meantime, a working budget of $19.6 million will be in effect.
