The combined operations of Commerce Bank and Portland-based TD Banknorth will be called TD Bank, the company announced today.

The merged company had planned to use the name TD Commerce Bank. The use of that name, however, faced a legal challenge. A federal court was preventing its use on signs and marketing material in some Massachusetts counties.

Bharat Masrani, president and chief executive officer, said the company was disappointed in the court decision but did not want to spend valuable time and resources on a legal challenge.

"We have decided to remain focused on our customers and employees and move forward under our new brand name of TD Bank, America's Most Convenient Bank," he said in a statement.

The bank will continue to use the green TD shield as part of its name.
