Augusta advanced to the championship portion of the 13-15-year-old Babe Ruth state tournament with a 15-5 win over Westbrook in a game-shortened to five-innings by the 10-run rule at Morton Field. Westbrook is made up of many of the same players that knocked Augusta out of the tournament last summer, winning twice on the final day.
"We came out too cocky (last summer)," said Augusta shortstop Michael Phelps, who went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored for Augusta. "We have to come out to play baseball and that is what we will do."
Westbrook falls into the losers' bracket and will play Mid-Coast North, which won twice on Saturday to stay alive, at 10 a.m. at McGuire Field. The winner will play Augusta at 1 p.m. at Morton Field. With a win, Augusta wins the tournament and advances to the New England Regional. An Augusta loss today would force the if necessary game on Monday.
Last summer, Augusta beat Westbrook in the winners' bracket final of the 14-year-old tournament, only get swept on the final day of play.
