Senior Appreciation Day set in Waterville

WATERVILLE $ Live music, prizes, a canine demonstration and a free lunch are on tap for Senior Appreciation Day, set for Saturday off Kennedy Memorial Drive.
The event will be held 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of Faith Evangelical Free Church and is sponsored by Northern Kennebec County TRIAD.

TRIAD is a group of seniors, law enforcement officials and service providers who work to increase safety for older adults through education and crime prevention. The organization tries to reduce criminal activity that targets older people and help alleviate their fear of victimization, build confidence and improve their quality of life.

Waterville Deputy police Chief Charles Rumsey said the appreciation day allows for law enforcement officials, seniors and others to enjoy a fun day out.

"It's an opportunity to share and have a good time," he said.

Rides are available to and from the event. Those wanting a ride should call Officer Todd Burbank at 859-1666.

"I'll be driving the van but I need to know their names and addresses," said Gil Pelletier, a TRIAD member who helped start Senior appreciation Day five years ago.

Pelletier said police chiefs and officers from area towns as well as Kennebec County Sheriff Randall Liberty and Chief Deputy Everett Flannery are expected to attend and work at the event.

"We're going to put them to work," he said. "We're planning for 400 to 600 people."

Organizers on Friday will set up the parking lot with tents in preparation for Saturday. Pelletier said area businesses have donated nearly 100 prizes to be given away, including everything from gas cards to gift certificates for pizza, ice cream, sandwiches and other items.

"We're overwhelmed with what the local businesses have done here," he said.
Booths will be set up to provide seniors with information about how to help keep them safe, and the band, Liz and Duo, will perform.

"It's a great thing for our senior citizens," Pelletier said. "It's great to get them out and under a tent and get them out of Dodge, so to speak. We try to give them something to remember."
