WINTHROP -- Police are on the lookout for a group of rifle- and chainsaw-wielding suspects after a string of burglaries on Friday.

The alleged burglars are also thought to be responsible for lighting a gas can on fire on Main Street shortly before 3 a.m. Friday, according to Winthrop police.

The suspects appear to have targeted unlocked cars and garages on Sturtevant Hill Road, Main Street and Route 133, according to Winthrop police reports. Residents reported the burglaries between 6:39 a.m. and 2:14 p.m.

Among the other stolen items are a cell phone charger and additional pocket-sized items, a Winthrop police dispatcher said.

The dispatcher said police have narrowed their search down to three or four suspects. Arrests could come early next week.
