Freeport gun dealer pleads guilty

A Freeport gun dealer pleaded guilty in federal court today to charges that he illegally sold handguns to a convicted felon and an out-of-state resident.

Wade Collett, 36, will be sentenced in November to one count of conspiracy, one count of selling a firearm to an out-of-state resident, and one count of making a false statement to a government agent.

For each count, Collett faces a maximum of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Collett pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Portland. He runs Red Wheel Enterprises, a gun shop in the same building as Red Wheel Antiques, on U.S. Route 1 in Freeport. Prosecutors say that between Dec. 18, 2005 and Feb. 20, 2006, Collett sold nine handguns to customers he knew were not the real buyers, who then turned the weapons over to Durrell "D-Block" Williams.

Williams, 22, of New York City, was also indicted in June. He was already in federal prison in New York for a prior conviction. Williams pleaded not guilty last month, and he remains in federal custody.

The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives led the investigation.
