Blaze that threatened home knocked down

By Portland Press Herald Staff Report August 03, 2008 04:06 PM

POLAND -- Firefighters knocked down a garage fire that threatened a home today.

The fire was sparked shortly before 2 p.m. when a resident was welding on a vehicle inside the garage at 678 Empire Road. Fire Chief Mark Bosse said the resident tried to put out the fire with an extinguisher, but it wasn't functional.

The garage was fully involved when firefighters arrived, the wind was blowing and the home was about 10 feet away, Bosse said. Firefighters were able to knock the fire down in about 45 minutes, he said. Paint on the home blistered, but it was otherwise OK.

Shop tools and two vehicles in the garage were destroyed. While the garage is still standing, Bosse said it will have to be rebuilt.

One firefighter had minor injuries from falling off a ladder, Bosse said.

Firefighters from Mechanic Falls, Minot, New Gloucester, Gray and Oxford assisted at the scene while the Paris Fire Department took care of Poland's station.
