Sea Dogs game canceled

After a two-hour delay Sunday afternoon, the Portland Sea Dogs' scheduled doubleheader with the Trenton Thunder at Hadlock Field was canceled because of wet conditions.

The heavy rains Saturday night and Sunday morning drenched Hadlock too much, according to the game officials, which included the umpires, both managers and Sea Dogs president and general manager Charlie Eshbach.

"It's not playable," Sea Dogs manager Arnie Beyeler said. "It's saturated and it's not getting any better. We waited two hours and it's really not improving."

Players came out to warm up before the 1 p.m. start but soon went back into the clubhouse. It was announced that the game was going to start at 2 p.m.

"There was some miscommunication," Eshbach said of the announcement.

Fans waited until 2 p.m., only to hear that the game would start at 2:35 p.m.

Then the umpires, Beyeler, Thunder manager Tony Franklin and Eshbach walked around the outfield.

"We did see some improvement," Eshbach said. "Unfortunately, the worst areas, while they improved, were still bad."

This was to be the final meeting between Trenton and Portland, so the game will not be made up.

Fans can exchange their tickets for any available game this season, or for a game next season, until July 1.
