Three Deering assistant coaches dismissed

Three assistant baseball coaches at Deering High School have been relieved of their duties, in light of an investigation into a party that involved alleged underage drinking in the company of adults. The party took place shortly after Deering won the state Class A baseball championship in June.

Frank Watson, Michael D'Andrea Jr. and Chris Grant have been dismissed as assistant coaches for the Rams. The decision was made by Portland Public Schools Superintendent Jeanne Whynot-Vickers and Deering Principal Ken Kunin.

Kunin would not comment on personnel matters but said the investigation is ongoing. Portland Police are also investigating the incident.

"We would like to wrap things up fairly quickly," Kunin said of the investigation. "We don't have to determine whether or not adults were furnishing to minors. That's for district attorney."
