Wilton public hearing on Lake Road traffic

WILTON - The Wilton Board of Selectmen will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m. tonight at the Wilton Municipal Building on amending the Parking and Traffic Ordinance to close Lake Road to through truck traffic.

Concern over pedestrian and traffic safety on Lake Road, which runs around Wilson Lake, has been discussed for months. In July, the board agreed to install bigger and brighter speed limit and pedestrian crossing signs, widen the road stripes and narrow the width of the driving lanes, and direct the police department to enforce the speed limit.

Residents and town officials also wanted to limit heavy truck traffic since it contributes to the deterioration of the asphalt. However, an ordinance, including a weight limit, has to be in place for it to be enforced.

Other items are to discuss a request from Bruce Manzer, Inc. who is seeking to recover asphalt cost increases on a repaving bid.

Also, the board will meet with Western Maine Community Action to discuss energy assistance measures for the months ahead. The discussion may include an offer from the agency to administer donated funds.

And selectmen are expected to respond to a survey from the Franklin County Commissioners about funding certain social service program grants. The county has been funding county-wide social service programs but some town officials have objected, saying they want local control over how those agencies are funded by grants.
