NAPLES - Shortly before 8 a.m., Deputies from the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office rescued a kayaker swho had fallen into Songo Lock in Naples.

Capt. Jeff Davis said deputies were close by when they were called to an area near the Lock - a stone masonry canal adjacent to Sebago Lake State Park. There they found Carol Emmons, 51, clinging to a rope. She was cold and weak, and told deputies she felt she was in danger of being swept away.

Deputy John Cross held on to Emmons' arm while Deputy Howard Brown placed a rope over the victim. They pulled her from the fast moving current. She was treated by Naples Fire and Rescue personnel for hypothermia and released.

Emmons, who is vacationing in Maine, had been kayaking with her daughter, Zoie, on the Lock, which is heavily used by boaters during the summer months. The daughter made it safely to shore.

The deputies said that Emmons would have been swept over a downstream by a strong current waterfall if they had not been in the area at the time.
