A Portland man accused of setting fire to 11 cars in a series of early morning fires in April was indicted today on 21 counts of arson.
Thomas Cassidy, 19 was indicted by a Cumberland County grand jury for allegedly setting fire to the cars April 11. The additional counts are because those fires then spread to nearby homes and other buildings, police said.
Cassidy is currently free on bail pending his arraignment in Cumberland County Superior Court.
Cassidy is accused of setting fire to cars on the Portland peninsula before dawn, sending firefighters and police scrambling.
Portland police began questioning anyone near any of the fires and an officer confronted Cassidy. They eventually discovered items stolen from one of the cars that burned. Cassidy also is charged with 11 counts of burglary to a car and three counts of theft.
