Androscoggin County Jail brawl

By The Associated Press wire report August 08, 2008 09:35 AM

Officials say a brawl that broke out during a behind-the-bars religious service in the Androscoggin County Jail may result in additional charges.

The administrator of the Auburn jail, John Lebel, says the outbreak of violence July 31 was the worst at the jail since it opened in 1990.

County Sheriff Guy Desjardins calls the event "a mini riot" and is grateful nobody was badly hurt.

The melee broke out as a row of inmates passed a seated prisoner. It took guards 30 seconds to arrive. About 40 inmates were present at the time.

A lockdown was ordered. Four inmates were charged with disorderly conduct and more charges may follow. Desjardins is asking state prosecutors to investigate whether a hate crime occurred.
