South Portland standoff ends in arrest

By Portland Press Herald Staff Report August 08, 2008 11:39 AM

A South Portland man was arrested this morning after a four-hour standoff on Huntress Avenue, police said.

South Portland police began looking for Richard Parsley, 44, after Auburn police asked local departments to watch for him in connection with domestic assault and theft allegations. Parsley also had an outstanding warrant from York County for operating under the influence.

Parsley, who lives in South Portland, was seen entering a house on Huntress Avenue just before 3 a.m., South Portland police said. He ignored officers' orders to stop, and police set up a cordon around the house and called in Special Reaction and Crisis Negotiation teams. The negotiating team contacted Parsley, police said, but he told them he would not submit to arrest.

The Special Reaction team went into the house about 7:30 a.m. this morning and arrested Parsley, who was booked at the Cumberland County Jail on the York County warrant and a charge of creating a police standoff lodged by South Portland police. Auburn police said they expected charges of theft and domestic assault would be lodged on their behalf today.
