Hiker airlifted out of Acadia

By The Associated Press wire report August 11, 2008 04:29 PM

A 61-year-old hiker who was airlifted off a mountaintop in Acadia National Park after she fell and hit her head has been discharged from a Bangor hospital.

Rangers say Martha Wagner of Mount Desert fell late Sunday afternoon on a trail on Sargent Mountain. Searchers found her near the summit with facial injuries and a possible concussion. Because of the location and the time of day, rangers were concerned about getting Wagner down the mountain safely.

Rangers called in a LifeFlight helicopter and found a fairly level ledge where it was able to land. Ranger Richard Rechholtz says it was the first time a LifeFlight chopper ever landed on any of the mountains in the park.
