Standish mulls community center

By John Richardson Portland Press Herald Staff Reporter August 13, 2008 09:41 AM

The Standish Town Council postponed a key decision on the future of a planned community center until later this month.

Councilors were scheduled on Tuesday to either accept or reject a committee plan to move forward with the $8.7 million project. Instead, they tabled the decision until after a workshop discussion on Aug. 28.

Voters decided in 2006 to spend $325,000 on an 8-acre lot on Northeast Road for the project. The town also hired an architect, who developed an $8.7 million design.

Councilors are divided on the project. Some want to send it to voters in a yes-or-no referendum while others want to scrap the plan and sell the land.
