Survivors of a 2004 massacre in Burundi will tell their stories at a commemoration this Sunday in Portland, organizers said.
The massacre of more than 150 Banyamulenge Congolese happened four years ago today in a refugee camp, within sight of United Nations and Burundian government officials, according to Georges Budago, who is organizing the event.
Portland is home to the largest Banyamulenge community outside of the Congo, according to Budago.
Sunday's event includes speeches from human rights lawyer Jean Paul Murwanashaka and several people who survived the massacre or lost family and friends in the massacre. It will be held at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church at 360 Cacno Road.
Budago said the Banyamulenge community wants to raise awareness of the ongoing turmoil and their efforts toward reconciliation.
