Steven Ricci meets with attorney, prosecutor

By Trevor Maxwell Portland Press Herald Staff Writer August 14, 2008 12:46 PM

A Portland man, whose release from jail earlier this year prompted concerns in a Brighton Avenue neighborhood, met with his attorney, a state prosecutor and a judge today at Cumberland County Superior Court.

The parties want to find an appropriate resolution for the case against 44-year-old Steven Ricci.

Ricci was charged in 2006 with attempted sexual abuse of a minor. He eventually pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of indecent conduct.

Ricci admitted to violating the terms of his probation in December 2007 by visiting an adult entertainment store. He was released on bail in January, but the sentencing for the probation violation has been put off since then, as the prosecutor and Ricci's defense lawyer try to reach an agreement.

Ricci has a mental disability that impairs his ability to control sexual impulses, prosecutors have said. He has spoken freely to authorities about his fantasies about rape, prompting police to issue warnings in Ricci's Brighton Avenue neighborhood in January.

Prosecutors are still considering the option of an out-of-state treatment program, or another alternative to jail time, as the sentence for Ricci's probation violation.

Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Norbert and defense lawyer J.P DeGrinney hope to make a recommendation to Justice Roland Cole at a court hearing on Aug. 28.
