Storm socks waterlogged Augusta

AUGUSTA -- A quick moving storm caused big headaches for police and public work crews Thursday afternoon.

Augusta policeSgt. Chris Massey said there were reports of street flooding throughout the city following the storm, which blew through the city just in time for the 5 p.m. rush hour.

The short-lived storm packed a wallop, delivering high winds, heavy rain and hail.

Leaves and limbs blown from trees plugged catch basins leaving no escape for the water, Massey said. Police were forced to shut a number of roads for up to 20 minutes as public works crews cleared the drains and the water receded.

A portion of the Winthrop Street road project was washed away, leaving about five yards of gravel spread across Water Street, Massey said.

No injuries or power outages were reported as a result of the storm, Massey said.
