Head-on crash kills Belgrade man

BELGRADE -- A Belgrade man was killed Friday in a head-on collision on Oakland Road.

Police said Paul Quirion, 39, of Belgrade died after he crossed the center line of Routes 8 and 11 and became entrapped when his car struck an oncoming pickup driven by a Mount Vernon woman.

Witnesses reported seeing Quirion's 2002 Kia go "way over the yellow line" as it traveled southbound on the highway north of Hemlock Point Road, Maine State Police Trooper William Plourde said.

As Quirion's car drifted into the northbound lane, a 1999 GMC pickup driven by Cheryl Aspinall, 40, of Mount Vernon attempted evasive action by pulling into his lane, but "the offending vehicle went back into the original lane" where the two vehicles collided head-on at approximately 2:45 p.m., Plourde said.

Both vehicles -- including Aspinall's truck, pulling a trailer with three canoes -- were totaled. The highway was closed for 2 1/2 hours.

Quirion was trapped inside his vehicle for approximately 20 minutes while members of the Belgrade Fire Department extricated him, Plourde said.

With Quirion lacking a pulse at the scene, authorities canceled a LifeFlight medical helicopter. But rescuers were able to rescucitate Quirion, and he was taken by Delta Ambulance to MaineGeneral Medical Center's Thayer Unit in Waterville, where he succumbed at 3:42 p.m., Plourde said.

Witnesses told Plourde both vehicles appeared to be driving near the 45-mph speed limit prior to the crash.

Plourde said alcohol was not a factor in the accident, and that "driver inattention" was likely the cause.

"Witnesses said he had gone way over the yellow line," Plourde said. "(Aspinall) did what she could to try to avoid it."
