PORTLAND -- Police this morning identified the victim of a fatal beating as 37-year-old Frank Williams III.

Williams was described as a transient from the Portland area.

Police said Williams died after being beaten by a pack of young men early Saturday morning. Williams was chased across a soccer field by the Kennedy Park housing development and was beaten in the southwest corner of the field until he was able to crawl under a fence, according to police.

Deputy Chief Bill Ridge said Williams had been stabbed but that police were waiting to learn the cause of death from the state medical examiner's office.

No arrests had been made as of late Sunday morning.

Police said investigators are talking to friends and relatives of Williams to try to piece together the events leading up to the beating.
