Sea Dogs win with walk-off single

The Portland Sea Dogs won their sixth straight game Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field, beating the Harrisburg Senators 3-2 on a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning.

With bases loaded and no outs, pinch-hitter Zach Daeges hit a broken-bat, slow ground ball to third base. As third baseman Ofilio Castro charged the ball, baserunner Argenis Diaz raced home.

Catcher Devin Ivany could not handle Castro's hurried throw, and Diaz slid in safe.

Portland reliever Daniel Bard (4-1) got the win with a perfect ninth inning.

Portland starter Adam Mills lasted 6 innings, allowing five hits, no walks and two runs. He struck out a career-high seven.

Harrisburg (68-61) held a 2-1 lead until Iggy Suarez singled in Diaz in the fourth inning.

Diaz, who scored all three Portland runs, began the ninth inning with a single off reliever Adam Carr (3-3). Jorge Jimenez doubled, with Diaz stopping at third. Suarez was intentionally walked, bringing Daeges to the plate.

Portland moved 3½ games ahead of the Binghamton Mets in the race for a playoff spot. The Mets were scheduled to play Sunday night.

The Sea Dogs will be out of town this week, at Altoona and Harrisburg, Pa. They return next Monday to Hadlock Field for the final home stand of the regular season, Aug. 25 to Sept. 1.
