Auburn police testing Segways

By The Associated Press wire report August 18, 2008 10:59 AM

Police in Auburn are testing out Segways as a way to save fuel.

The two-wheeled devices, which move officers along at a brisk 12 mph, have been taking police where no cruiser can go for the last couple of weeks.

Deputy Chief Jason Moen says the Auburn department is looking for alternative fuel solutions, and the Segway can go eight hours on a battery charge. Moen calls the upright vehicle a very fuel-efficient tool enabling officers to cover a lot more ground in the least amount of time.

Moen says that if all goes well, police will work the purchase of a Segway into next year's budget.
