WELLS -- The Board of Selectmen will hold a public hearing Tuesday on a proposed moratorium on large-scale water extraction.
The moratorium proposal comes after the Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, and Wells Water District tabled a plan to sell water to Poland Spring.
After public opposition, district trustees tabled the plan, which would have allowed the sale of up to 432,000 gallons per day of excess capacity for roughly $900,000 per year.
The moratorium would be in place until the town develops a comprehensive water extraction ordinance. The moratorium would also apply to testing in anticipation of water extraction on public, private and state land in Wells.
The public hearing is part of a meeting that is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
