PORTLAND - Sen. Susan Collins says the Navy has reversed course and decided to push for construction of a third DDG-1000 destroyer, which would be built at Bath Iron Works in Maine.
The Maine Republican said Navy Secretary Donald Winter informed her Monday of the decision. It comes one month after the Navy said it was scrapping the program in favor of building more of the current-generation DDG-51 destroyers.
Collins said the Navy also plans to shift some funding in order to purchase spare parts for the DDG-51s that could be used to restart production of that class.
She said the decision will help ensure a stable workload at the Bath shipyard.
