WEST GARDINER - A New Gloucester man is facing drunk driving charges after crashing his pickup on Indiana Road Saturday morning.

Stephen Jeffrey Hanson, 33, was taken by ambulance to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with rib injuries.

He was issued a summons charging him with operating a vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant, said Chief Deputy Everett Flannery of the Kennebec County Sheriff's Department.

The crash occurred around 2 a.m. as Hanson was driving north on Indiana Road. Hanson lost control of his pickup about a mile south of the Lewiston Road and veered toward the right shoulder, Flannery said. The pickup rolled over onto the passenger side and came to rest against a tree.

"There is a deep ditch there," Flannery said.

Hanson was wearing a seatbelt.

There is no explanation for why Hanson's pickup left the road. Speed is not believed to have been involved.

"Alcohol is believed to be a factor," Flannery said.

Hanson's 1993 Nissan pickup was totaled.
