Confirmation hearings underway

By The Associated Press wire report August 19, 2008 10:13 AM

AUGUSTA -- The Legislature's Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee today is reviewing seven candidates for the newly-created State Board of Corrections.

Waldo County Sheriff Scott Story of Monroe, who has been nominated to serve on the board, told the committee that he believes smaller county jails, such as the one in Waldo County, can play an important role in a combined state-county correctional system.

"I think we're going to find that same savings we're looking for by finding an efficient use of what we have," he said.

Down the hall, the Insurance and Financial Services Committee is getting ready to start a series of hearings on nominees to the Dirigo Health Board and for the top spot at the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation.
