Portland police are looking for just three men in the stabbing death of Frank A. Williams III over the weekend, and say the witness who initially told police that a crowd was chasing the man had misconstrued events.
Williams, 37, was stabbed to death Saturday morning on a soccer field near the Kennedy Park housing complex. Williams did not have a fixed address and had a history of drug abuse, family members say.
Police believe he was acquainted with the men who attacked him though they have not positively identified the suspects yet.
The resident who first reported the 1:40 a.m. incident saw a group of eight people gathered on the soccer field, who ran as the attack was taking place. However, other witnesses who were closer to the actual attack told police that the onlookers seemed to congregate as the argument broke out, and then scattered when it became violent.
Those witnesses told police that three men were chasing Williams and attacked him.
Williams died later at the hospital of multiple stab wounds.
