Harmony Fair set for Aug. 29-Sept. 1

HARMONY $ The Harmony Labor Day Free Fair, celebrating its 61st anniversary this year, has added some new events to its old favorites from Aug. 29-Sept. 1 at the Patriarchs Club Fairgrounds.

Expect the animal barn and oxen teams, but also leather-carving demonstrations, antique vehicles, live music and a demolition derby.

The Fair opens at 3 p.m. Aug. 29 with a new midway, a cribbage tournament at 4 p.m., and a talent show and truck pulls at 5 p.m.

The demolition derby begins at noon Aug. 30. The morning is packed with activities, too. The Children's Area opens at 9 a.m. and a Children's Music Workshop will be held at 10 a.m. a co-ed volleyball tournament starts at 9:30 a.m., and a barrel-racing competition gets underway at 10 a.m.

Saturday's music starts with Bob Elston and the Road Rangers at1:30, 3 and 5 p.m. Bobby Lewis will perform music of the 1950s, '60s, and '70s at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The fun continues Aug. 31 with crafts in the Children's Area and the Roy Lake Memorial Draft Horse Events (including a two-horse pull), both starting at 10 a.m. At 1 p.m. and 2 p.m., the Hillbilly Band performs.

The day also features frog-jumping and pig-scramble contests and fireworks.

On Sept. 1, a parade steps off at 9:30 a.m. with bands, floats, cars, horses, fire trucks, clowns, antique cars, color guards and more.
Take in the Horse Show at 11 a.m. At noon, you can dine at the buffet at the Gym Dinner, held at the Harmony Elementary school, across the street form the fairground. The Miles To Go band plays at noon, 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
