UPDATE: Woman dies after crash

By David Hench Portland Press Herald Staff Writer August 20, 2008 04:24 PM

Falmouth police are still notifying family members about a 79-year-old
Portland woman who died after the car she was driving crashed into a tree
this morning on Blackstrap Road.

The woman was driving south at about 9:15 a.m. when her Chevrolet Malibu
crossed over the oncoming lane and struck a large tree at 239 Blackstrap
Road.

The accident occurred on a straight stretch of the highway, and police do
not know what caused the driver to veer across the road, said Falmouth
Police Officer Tim Libby. There were no skid marks at the scene, he said.

The woman was wearing a seatbelt, which firefighters cut to extricate her
from the vehicle, Libby said.

Police were trying to contact family members to notify them of the accident,
he said, and to determine whether the woman had any medical conditions that
may have contributed to the crash.
