Prayer flap heads to City Hall tonight

By Portland Press Herald Staff Report August 21, 2008 11:21 AM

A rabbi who was ordered by the city to halt weekly prayer meetings at his Portland home will take his case to City Hall today.

Rabbi Moshe Wilansky is asking the city's Zoning Board of Appeals to rescind an order banning the gatherings. The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the council chambers.

City officials argue that Wilansky's prayer meetings at his 101 Craigie St. home violate zoning regulations in his neighborhood.

Wilansky, his lawyer and the Maine Civil Liberties Union argue that the directive violates the rabbi's religious liberties.

Supporters of Wilansky are scheduled to rally on his behalf in front of City Hall beginning at 5:30 p.m.
