Portland police say a man armed with an aluminum bat robbed a clerk at La Quinta Inn at 340 Park Avenue early this morning.

The clerk told police that a slim man wearing a dark watch cap and sunglasses and wielding a bat, leaped over the counter at 1:38 a.m. and said he didn't want to hurt her, but she had to give him money.

He ran off with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.
