WINTHROP -- U.S. Route 202 was littered with debris but nobody was injured after a six-car pileup at the Stanley Road intersection Thursday.
Damage estimates ranged from $1,000 to $3,000, and only two of the cars could be driven from the scene. But none of the drivers -- or five passengers, all younger than 9 -- had to be taken to the hospital.
"There were a lot of young kids," Winthrop police Capt. Ryan Frost said. "We're lucky."
The crash occurred just before 4 p.m. as three vehicles, driven by Lee Brock, 64, of Waterville; Anil Raj Duggal, 43, of New York; and Heather Hanson, 28, of Augusta waited in the eastbound passing lane to turn left onto Stanley Road.
A fourth eastbound vehicle, being driven by Damien Malloy, 17, of Augusta failed to notice the left-hand turning vehicles in front of him until the last minute, Frost said. He tried to avoid Hanson's vehicle but caromed off and into the other lane, into the path of a westbound pickup truck being driven by John Callinan, 60, of Winthrop, Frost said.
Malloy's vehicle's struck Callinan's truck in the rear driver's side and pinballed into another pickup being driven by Edward Arsenault, 56, of Monmouth, who had been following Callinan's vehicle west.
The force of the impact with Arsenault's truck pushed Malloy's car back into Brock's stopped vehicle.
Parts and pieces blown free by the crash with Callinan's vehicle peppered Duggal's car, Frost said. Molloy's 1996 Saturn was totaled, Frost said.
The other vehicles -- Hanson's 1996 Saturn four-door, Callinan's 2002 Toyota Tundra, Arsenault's 1998 Nissan Frontier, Brock's 2003 Subaru Legacy wagon and Duggal's 1999 Subaru Legacy -- each sustained at least $1,000 damage.
Traffic was slowed, but continued flowing, Frost said.
Alcohol did not play a role but officers are investigating whether speed was a factor. There were no charges as of Thursday evening.
