Ocean energy conference coming to Maine

By Tux Turkel Portland Press Herald Staff Writer August 22, 2008 10:18 AM

A meeting billed as the world's leading event focused on renewable and sustainable energy from the oceans will be held at the Samoset Resort in Rockport on June 16-18, 2009.

More than 300 technologists, financiers and policy makers from around the world will gather at the EnergyOcean Conference to share and discuss opportunities for the renewable market of ocean-based energy.

"To help kick our country's dependence on foreign oil, we need to be doing a better job harnessing our solar, wind and ocean energy," Gov. John Baldacci said. "These are natural resources that are abundant in Maine. It is exciting and encouraging to me that we will be hosting some of the most forward thinking individuals on ocean energy in our State next summer. I hope that we can use this opportunity to learn from each other and see real progress with respect to ocean energy in Maine in the near future."

The State will work with conference organizers and industry leaders to create a world-class event and the close proximity to Nova Scotia allows the organizers to work with Canada and make this a strong North American event.
