Maine colleges listed among top schools

Several Maine schools made the 2009 Best Colleges list published today by U.S. News and World Report on its Web site.

Bowdoin College in Brunswick ranked No. 6 among the nation's liberal arts colleges, followed by Colby College in Waterville at No. 23 and Bates College in Lewiston at No. 24. College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor made the list as a Tier 3 liberal arts school.

Maine Maritime Academy in Castine ranked No. 10 among bachelor's degree-granting schools in the Northeast, followed by the University of Maine at Farmington at No. 18. Unity College and the University of Maine at Fort Kent made the list among Tier 3 bachelor's degree-schools in the region, followed by Thomas College in Waterville and the University of Maine at Augusta among Tier 4 schools.

The University of New England in Portland and Biddeford ranked 81 among universities in the Northeast that offer undergraduate and some master's degree program but few doctoral programs.

The magazine will be available on newsstands Monday.
