ORONO $ Winslow High School graduate Katie Souviney, who was a New England champion in the heptathlon and America East champion in the pentathlon at the University of Maine, will return to the Black Bears as an assistant track and field coach.

Souviney, who graduated from Winslow in 2002, set seven school records while competing at Maine.

"I'm glad to have Katie back with us now as a member of the coaching staff," Maine track and field coach Mark Lech said. "She brings a lot of enthusiasm, personal knowledge and experience to the events she will coach for the program. She was a great competitor here as an athlete and I know that will carry over to her coaching."

Souviney will primarily coach hurdlers and multi-event athletes at Maine. She earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in exercise fitness physiology while at Maine and is a certified strength and condition specialists.

In 2006, Souviney won the America East indoor pentathlon with 3,508 points. In 2004, she won the New England heptathlon championship with 4,638 points.
