Prosecutors will not pursue domestic violence charges against a Chebeague Island resident arrested last month after an argument with his daughter.
James Phipps, 50, was arrested last month on an assault charge for allegedly spanking his 20-year-old daughter after a dispute over a boyfriend and a $5,000 cellular phone bill.
Phipps will attend family counseling, but the domestic violence charge was suspended this morning in Portland District Court, said Michael Cunniff, his attorney.
Cunniff said prosecutors will drop the charge in a year if no other problems arise.
Phipps, who is blind, is a lawyer who serves as president and chief executive officer of the Iris Network, a statewide organization that helps those without sight live independently. He is also president of the Casco Bay ferry service operator's board of directors.
