Weinrich to be named Pirates' assistant

Eric Weinrich, a veteran of 18 NHL seasons who grew up in Gardiner, is expected to be named as one of the two new assistant coaches of the Portland Pirates hockey team.

The announcement will be made at a 2 p.m. press conference Tuesday at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Weinrich, 41, is a defeseman who began the 2006-07 season as an assistant coach for the Pirates before returning to the ice as a player for the past 1-1/2 seasons.
